Upper Outer Buttock

Dorsogluteal (Upper Outer Quadrant)
Difficulty

intermediate

Max Volume

4.0ml

Needle Gauge

21-23G

Needle Length

1.5-2"

Description

The dorsogluteal site is located in the upper outer quadrant of the buttock. While historically common, it is now less recommended due to proximity to the sciatic nerve and major blood vessels.

PIP Likelihood:

Injection Technique

1. Divide the buttock into four quadrants
2. Use only the upper outer quadrant
3. Stay at least 2-3 inches from the center line
4. Clean the area thoroughly
5. Insert needle at 90-degree angle
6. Aspirate carefully
7. Inject slowly
8. Withdraw and massage gently

Rotation Schedule

Rotate between left and right sides. Allow at least 5-7 days between injections in the same site.

Common Mistakes

Injecting too close to the center (sciatic nerve risk), not using upper outer quadrant exclusively, inadequate needle length for deeper muscle.

⚠️ Nerve & Safety Warnings

CAUTION: Sciatic nerve runs through this area. Always use upper outer quadrant only. Nerve damage can cause permanent disability.
