The vastus lateralis is the large muscle on the outer side of the thigh. It is easily accessible, has good muscle mass, and is relatively safe for self-injection.

PIP Likelihood:
✓ Beginner Friendly

Injection Technique

1. Divide the thigh into thirds from hip to knee
2. Use the middle third of the outer thigh
3. The muscle is about a hand's width from the side of the leg
4. Sit or lie down for stability
5. Clean the area
6. Pinch the muscle if needed
7. Insert at 90-degree angle
8. Aspirate and inject slowly
9. Withdraw and apply pressure

Rotation Schedule

Excellent for frequent rotation. Can alternate between left and right thighs, and move up/down within the middle third. Allow 3-4 days per site.

Common Mistakes

Injecting too far forward (rectus femoris) or too far back (hamstrings), not using middle third, injecting while standing (muscle tension).

⚠️ Nerve & Safety Warnings

Relatively safe. Avoid the inner thigh where major blood vessels run. Stay on the outer aspect of the thigh.
